    Field evaluation of exterior tile wall with organic low modulus adhesives in Taiwan, five years after installation

    The installation of tiles to exterior walls with a low modulus organic adhesive is only adopted limited regions, such as Japan, even though the quality standard for the organic adhesive for exterior tiling was standardized as ISO14448 in 2016. In Taiwan, many buildings have exterior tile walls, but the organic adhesives are rarely used. In order to confirm that the organic adhesives can be effectively applied in Taiwan, the durability of the adhesive was evaluated using the exterior walls of actual building. Appropriate evaluation of materials used in the exterior walls of buildings should be carried out under the climate, environment, construction conditions, and culture of the country or region to which they are applied.
    The field evaluation was carried out in Tainan City, southern Taiwan, which is high temperature and humid all year round and often experiences heavy rain caused by typhoons from June to September. The exterior tiles evaluated were adhered to Taiwanese mortar or a waterproofing bases with organic low modulus adhesive based on silyl terminated polyether, in 2019. The durability of the exterior tile walls was evaluated by tensile adhesion test in March 2024.
    It was confirmed that exterior tiles with organic low modulus adhesive applied onto a mortar base maintained good adhesion even five years after installation. On the other hand, the adhesion of tiles applied onto waterproofing materials were not so good. Depending on the type of organic adhesive and waterproofing material, they might be incompatible. The compatibility between the adhesive and the adherend, such as waterproofing material, should be checked before installation.
