Personal Biography:
Dr. Chu graduated from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, majoring in Applied Chemistry. Currently, he is the manager of the Precision Radical Polymerization and Applications Laboratory of the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), which has more than 6000 employees and is affiliated to the Taiwan government. Dr. Chu’s laboratory consists of 7 researchers. The topic they focus on include block copolymer, nanomaterial dispersion, plastic recycling, UV-curable hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive, and supercritical foaming molding. They were experienced to incorporate polymer synthesis, polymer modification, and polymer blending processing to assist industries in product development and enhancement. In addition, their innovations are kept in line with the megatrend and Taiwan government’s policies, focusing on Rubber and plastic recycling, low carbon footprint epoxy resins, CO2-based matrix polymers, and Lightweight foam products.

Functionalized Polyolefin Development and Its ApplicationsAbstract:
To achieve of net-zero carbon emission goal, all countries take deep looks on the ways to reduce carbon emissions. Besides the energy management and the facilities upgrades which belong to scope 1 and 2, the materials chosen have gradually been switched to low carbon materials and the one-component product design for easy-recycling has become a popular strategy. Polyolefin possessing low carbon property has become one of the candidates for one-component product design.
In this presentation, the developments of one-polyolefin related products will be introduced, such as polyolefin primer, adhesive and ink. All product developments are originated from the core technology: polyolefin functionalization and chain length control technology. Through this technology platform, we’re able to precisely control the functionalization degree and chain length distribution. The polyolefin backbone and the grafting monomers can also be flexibly selected regarding to the products needs, such as high surface wettability, strong surface adhesion/bonding, great heat resistance, good filler dispersion and printability. With this technology empowered, we have developed low dielectric loss polyolefin bonding sheet for flexible copper clad laminates, polyolefin primer for polypropylene pretreatments, polyolefin ink for gravure printing…etc., and some of advanced applications are still in development.
